Finalist Update: EvoPhase Explore

December 2, 2024

EvoPhase, a Manchester Prize finalist has revealed the Birmingham Blade—the world’s first AI-designed urban wind turbine tailored to the unique wind conditions of a specific location.

This unique turbine addresses a critical challenge in green energy: developing compact, affordable generators optimised for low wind speeds and urban turbulence. Designed for Birmingham’s average wind speed of 3.6 m/s, the Birmingham Blade is up to seven times more efficient than conventional turbines in similar conditions.

EvoPhase Explore utilises an evolutionary design process to simulate and refine over 2,000 designs in just weeks—achieving breakthroughs that could traditionally take years. The result is a lightweight, rooftop-friendly turbine ready for real-world deployment.

KwikFab produced the first iteration of the Birmingham Blade to demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing the design. An aluminium version will be sited on a roof space in Birmingham for evaluation and testing, and the final product is expected to be available by late 2025.
